Audio: Jake Reads JH Prynne’s “Sketch for a Financial Theory of the Self”

I decided to experiment today with recording and uploading an audio file for use on the blog. Experiment successful. This poem by JH Prynne is one of my favourite things. I hope you like it. I did it with just iMovie and the mic in my laptop, so quality may be iffy. Also, I may decide that my voice sounds too much like a jube-jube come to life to be kept on the internet, and may eventually take the whole thing down.

Jake Reads JH Prynne’s Sketch for a Financial Theory of the Self

I like this poem. This poem gets me. For the record, I took it from his collected volume calledPoems (Bloodaxe Books, 2005), but the original collection it comes from is called “Kitchen Poems” (1968).

J.A.M–kudos on the Prynne blogcast: you’re the first Canadian poet I myself know of who has come out in favour of Prynne–I’ve known about his work for a long time, but only just started to try to dig (into) it, thanks to an article in the TLS–Hope you post some of what you make of his monumental corpus!

Like that a lot. If you think you might be doing more of this, I recommend downloading Audacity. I expect it’ll give you more options for editing than iMovie, tho I don’t have the latter, so p’r’aps not.

    Bryan.

Have you seen this thing in Jacket about him? A long time overdue, but excellent comeuppance… http://jacketmagazine.com/07/prynne-jk-rm.html

Thanks for the link–no, this piece I hadn’t seen.

Nice reading, Jake. Aside from the poem itself, I love your opening “Hello.” It sounded like you had just picked up the phone. It was so nice to eavesdrop on you in my living room in Wisconsin.

What a delight to uncover your reading in the internet. Prynne’s poetry makes much more sense to me when heard. I’ve been slowly enjoying his Sub-songs and will continue rereading it with echoes of your fine reading. Money eh… and value… questions reverberate.

  7. I wanted to thank you for this great read!
! I definitely enjoyed every little bit of it. I’ve got you saved as a favorite to check out new stuff you post…

  8. It cleanses the physique and makes the dieter

Undeniably consider that that you stated. Your favorite reason seemed to be at the web the simplest factor to
take into account of. I say to you, I definitely
get irked whilst people think about concerns that
they plainly do not know about. You managed to hit the nail upon the highest and also defined out the entire thing with no need side-effects , people can take a signal.

Will probably be back to get more. Thank you
